Trains of Thought
Another step in training your mind is understanding how your own mind works.
Using a free association technique is a good way to do this.
Start with a word, phrase or idea, and see where it takes you. Write the ideas down as they come for later study.
For example, today I heard a Kelly Clarkson song playing on the radio. That got me thinking about American Idol, which led me to thinking of other winners and runners-up, like Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken and Katharine McPhee. Those are the only ones I could remember, having never watched the show and having forgotten (at that time) about Carrie Underwood.
And, when you think of Katharine McPhee, what naturally comes to mind? Why Archie McPhee, of course!
That, naturally, leads to the Martian Popping Thing, which is a nice stress reliever.
Try it yourself!
Understanding how your own thought patterns work will later help you to train and improve your mind, in such areas as memory and clear thinking.

That’s Odd. I was actually thinking about American Idol today too. But my train of thought was a little bit different. I was recalling how famous the contestants were during the show and how you hear nothing of them any more. And that’s all i have to say about that…
You’re right. I only remember the ones I mentioned. I looked up the whole list on Wikipedia, and you recognize and remember the others once you see their names.
And, honestly, since I don’t watch the show, I didn’t know Carrie Underwood was an American Idol winner until sometime after I had seen her in commercials for Hershey’s (I think). Really, when I think of American Idol, I only remember Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken, and then Ruben Studdard because he beat Clay Aiken, but Aiken has overshadowed him ever since. Katharine McPhee only comes into memory because I hear about her on different shows.
As far as songs go, the only songs I would recognize are Kelly Clarkson’s and one or two by Carrie Underwood. I have no idea what songs the others have done.
You just inspired me! Great post and way to train your mind.
I don’t know all those people you mentioned, but I believe they are some sort of inspiration to some people.
Great thoughts!
