Proofread Your Comments
As you read different articles about blogging, you will frequently read how important it is to proofread before you publish your blog post.
It is even more important to proofread your comments before leaving them on other blogs. You can always fix errors on your own blog posts, but you frequently cannot do so with your comments on other blogs.
So, proofread your comments, and avoid embarrassing comments like this.
[The word "question" should have the letter "t" in it--just an FYI for those who don't immediately spot the typo. UPDATE: Leonid Shalimov was kind enough to fix my mistake, so you won't see it now. Thanks Leonid! But, you might not always be lucky enough to have a blogger like Leonid fix your typos, so be sure to proofread those comments!]

Fixed it for you ;).
Thanks!
Great advise. I’ve said some pretty stupid things that a few seconds of spot checking would have prevented.
By the way thanks for linking to my blog!
No problem. I think I have the links pointing to your new URL. If not, let me know!
You do, but even if you didn’t I’ve got a .htaccess 301 redirect setup.
Technorati doesn’t recognize 301 redirects, so it’s best when you can get people to point to the new URL. I learned that in my domain switch.
Very good point. I have to admit that I am a bad English writer.
Good reminder!
Thanks!
PS. I use Google toolbar’s Check feature, but it won’t check my grammer…. ;-(
Math is my weak point. Sometimes I even mess up when I use a calculator.
Usually, though, it’s a mistake in my algebra. Everybody thinks that they’ll never need to use algebra after they graduate, but it’s amazing the number of times it comes in handy.

I have stumbled you post. I hope more people to read you post.
Great thanks!!
Thanks again!
Wow, good advice.
And i’ve discover another great blog again, cheers.
Happy blogging.
Thanks! And thanks for stopping by!
good tip, proofreading comments is important because if you make a mistake you may have to comment again to say you messed up and some may see that as spamming, which of course is not good.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Good point. But, I bet most people aren’t going to see it as spamming, unless you make a habit of it. Still, it’s best not to have to re-comment in the first place.
Damn good point. If I’d left a comment on a blog that made me look foolish, full of typos or whatever, I’d feel mighty impressed if the blog author corrected my mistakes. I think it’s important not to go too overboard though, or else you may end up rewriting everybody’s comments as if you were following an AP style guide.
Thanks for stopping by!
I don’t mind at all that Leonid fixed my typo. But, I don’t think it’s something bloggers should be in the habit of doing for their commentators.
For one thing, if you have a busy blog (or a slow blog that turns into a busy one), you’re not going to have time to fix all the typos and errors that people make.
The other thing, and the more important thing, is credibility. If readers begin to see that comments are edited, they may begin to wonder what exactly is being edited. Was it just a typo, or was something else deleted or changed?
I think you can reasonably edit curse words if you don’t want them appearing on your blog, by replacing them with something like f***. I think you can also simply delete inappropriate posts too. But, I don’t think we would want bloggers to be exercising a “line item veto” on any of our comments.
Edit for curse words, delete for inappropriateness, but otherwise leave comments alone.
And, please note that none of this is directed in any way at Leonid! As I said, I don’t mind that he fixed my typo, especially since I made a big deal of it.
I’ve made a couple of errant comments, but it’s no big deal to me. People will understand one or two, as long as it’s not chronic.
Also, use Firefox because it has the built-in spell-check on the fly feature. It’s saved me a lot, and even in this post!
