Desktop Conundrum / Catch-22

As I mentioned the other day, I am working on cleaning up my desk. As I mentioned a couple moons ago, I have five computers on my desk (six if you count the Newton eMate 300). Only one of these computers was purchased new (it’s the one that’s about 12 years old).

I want to get that number down to three computers. I could get it down to two, but it’s a big desk and if I get a KVM switch, two of the computers can share a keyboard, mouse and monitor.

Anyway, back to the cleansing of the desk. I have cleaned out a fair degree of stuff. The conundrum is the rest of the stuff. You see, I have stuff that could be filed in the file cabinet. Problem is the file cabinet is filled with stuff from the last time I cleaned my desk. A fair amount of that too could be filed, if not for all the books in the file cabinet.

The reason the books are in the file cabinet is because I have run out of room in the bookcases. I could store the books in boxes, but I need them for different projects.

And, that’s where the Catch-22 comes in. If I could get my desk cleaned up and get the computers all organized, I could actually finish those projects, whereby I could then store away the books, file the stuff in the file cabinet and have a nice, orderly desktop.

Plus, if I could complete all those projects, I’d have a much better chance of reaching my goal, which would allow me to pay off all my debts, get a new computer, get some other new equipment I would like, maybe buy a big house or maybe move my business to a nice building.

On the plus side, I did discover a way to save energy. I discovered that a monitor on a computer I infrequently use wasn’t turned off the last time I used it. Found that out when I wondered why a stack of papers I moved was warm. Fortunately, the monitor is connected to a power strip and was only on when I was using the other computer.

Anyway, back to the cleaning grind…

36 square inches of desk space and down to three computers!

Unfortunately, not the three specific computers I wanted to be down to, but making progress nonetheless!

There seems to be so much stuff that you need to sort through that I imagine the room to be gigantic!

This reminds me of whenever I clean or am packing my room…

It always looks its very WORST when I’m making the MOST progress! Good luck, I hope you achieve the organized chaos you desire. ;)

I am now realizing that my chair is not so comfortable, now that I have two computers in working positions. I’ll have to tweak this setup or get a new chair, because this current arrangement is not comfortable at all.

You mean the chair is uncomfortable or the chair position is awkward? Or both?

A good chair often makes me bring up my knees and get too comfortable, but then if it’s really uncomfortable it encourages clutter on my desk because I’ll get irritated.

Both, more so for the position though. But, it’s really not a chair designed for long-term sitting. The old chair was a typical office chair. The current chair is a metal-folding chair with a seat cushion. Okay for sitting in one place, but not for spinning around using multiple computers. Sitting sidewise in the chair is not really that comfortable at all.

The reason I’m not using the old chair is because it is broken. Haven’t figured out how to fix it.
