Increase Privacy AND Readers/Sales

Increase Your Privacy

Concerned about what search engines, like Google, knows about you and your searching habits? Ask.com is introducing a new feature, AskEraser, which will help you keep your searches more private.

Increase Your Readers/Sales

Of course, what may be of greater interest to bloggers and webmasters is the little tidbit on statistics. According to the article, Ask.com was used for only 4.7% of searches in October. But, of greater interest is Google’s statistic: 58.5%.

While that may seem big, consider this: if you are focusing your web efforts around Google, trying to get in the top of Google’s results, you could be missing out on 40% of your potential readers or customers!

Google may be the largest, but the odds are not overwhelmingly in its favor. Think of it this way, by targeting Google, you are really targeting the approximately 20% of people who are using Google rather than the other search engines. Is it worth putting up with all of Google’s fickleness and “guidelines” to fight to reach those other 20%? Could you do better by more effectively targeting the other search engines and, perhaps more easily, reaching that 40%?

Let’s say we have 100 people. If you can get 15% of the non-Google users to visit your site (that would be 6 people) that would be the equivalent of getting 10% of Google users to visit your site. The difference is that it may be easier to achieve 15% from the non-Google users than it is to scratch and claw your way to the top to reach 10% of the Google users.

Make sense?

Remember, Google’s not the only game in town. If you’re worrying solely about Google, you could be missing out on the 40% of people not using Google for search.

You’re absolutely right! I was going to write an article about this and now I hate you.

Haha! My monkeys type faster than your monkeys. Must be the caffeine I put in the bananas. ;-)
