What is This Blog All About?

“dcrBlogs is a motivational blog that covers blogging, business and brain power, with an occasional bit of the great outdoors.”

As I’ve mentioned before, I usually don’t do so well at describing and categorizing my own projects, which makes marketing and promotion somewhat difficult. The description above is what I currently use on Technorati, and other sites in a slightly modified or unmodified way.

Do you think you can do better?

Now, I know I have writers and editors reading my blog, if not everyday then at least from time to time. Heck, my first comment was from Michael Kwan. And, there are others, such as Chris, JD, Doug, Lillie Ammann, Jeanne, Nina, Mike and others I’ve overlooked or didn’t know were writers.

Of course, this isn’t limited to just writers. Anyone can participate.

Participate in what? you ask? Yeah, I suppose I should explain that part.

If you think you can write a better description for my blog, roughly 20-30 words, let me see what you’ve got! Post your description in the comments. If I like someone else’s description better than my own, and the odds are in your favor on that, I will choose that description and use it. The winner will get $10 via PayPal. (See disclaimer below.) Naturally, this means that I get all rights to use the winning entry and by participating by leaving a comment with a description, you are agreeing to those terms. I think it’s a pretty good deal. Sure, it’s writing on spec, which I would normally discourage, but this is a contest and it’s not like I’m asking you to write the Great American Novel on spec. But, think of it… twenty-five words (average), ten bucks, hey, that’s forty cents per word, which is a pretty good rate. Well, for the winner anyway. You have until next Wednesday, January 9th at midnight. I’ll announce a winner as early as Friday, January 11th, maybe over that weekend. It will depend on how many entries I have to sort through.

*Void where prohibited. You must be able to accept a PayPal payment. So, if you’re in a country not served by PayPal, sorry. Any applicable taxes are the responsibility of the winner. And, I reserve the right to retroactively apply any legal stuff I should have included but didn’t know I should have.

Oh, all participants will get some link love.

Why am I doing this? you ask?

I want to grow this blog this year, so I’ll need a better description to help promote it and attract the right readers. You know, people that will love this blog and want to visit it every day, even when I post pictures of lunch. And, people that will click on links and buy stuff too because lunch isn’t free.

I only have three words to describe your blog.

Dreams Come Real

It’s inspirational and motivational. It fits your DCR title.

How does that sound?

I think your description is perfect—especially if you’re incorporating “Believe. Act. Achieve!” It’s so hard to be objective about how we describe our own works. We never think we’ve really caught the essence. You’ll probably get some good ideas—and they’ll be well worth considering, as objectivity is sometimes key, but no one knows what your blog is about better than you. And you’ve said it: simply, effectively, and succinctly.

Dan,

I have to agree with JD that your original description is very good. However, I had to try my hand at it, since you’ve asked us to attempt it. I’ve gone ’round and ’round, trying to come up with the best way to express what I want to get across, as well as what you want to get across.

Anyway, here’s my description:

dcrBlogs focuses on blogging, business, and brain power—with a bit of the great outdoors thrown in for good measure. Drop by and be motivated, challenged, inspired, entertained, and informed.

Are multiple entries allowed, in case I come up with a better idea?

Jeanne

I’m not going to comment on any entries until after the deadline. That’s one of those retroactive things I should have mentioned but didn’t. But, to answer Jeanne’s question, yes, multiple entries are allowed.

I think what the blog is about is less important than what it is and what it does.

dcrBlogs motivates readers to believe, act, and achieve by looking at life with wit, wisdom, and engaging creativity.
