That was a really entertaining read, Dan! You really had me going and the lottery bit made me laugh... Very wise words. There are a lot of scammers out there who claim it is easy to make a ton of money blogging, etc., but these are really good tips. Thanks for sharing. (@ckanal on Twitter)

Mabey just aiming a bit on the high side, I would start with around a thousand quid a month and build from there. Getting your blog all set up is the easy part, keeping the momentum going is the hard part.
A lot of people would be happier with a lottery ticket than a blog, it's so "just give me the lottery Ticket"

On monetization... I think a website's number one monetization goal should be to build an email list. Without you will never see most of the people who visit your blog ever again. Most people aren't going to buy something from you the first time they visit your site anyway. And, if they click on an affiliate or PPC link you may never see them again and you've lost a potential long-term customer to a $0.5 click.

Don't get me wrong, I use affiliate programs and PPC to make money, but I always try to get people to subscribe to my RSS feed or mailing list first. That way I can followup with them indefinitely with other offers.
