So This Blog Sucks (With Apologies to Those Who Feel “Sucks” is a Dirty Word)

Niche blogging is the way to go, so the “experts” claim. Yet, you’ll notice that some of the top bloggers (e.g., John Chow) post a hodgepodge of topics. And reviews that no one really cares about. And so on.

Yet, I continue to start niche blogs and then never get around to keeping them up to date. Take, for example, dcrWrites.com, which I thought would be a good idea wherein I could post all my fiction there and not here, thus boring those of you who really don’t care to read fiction.

And, you are no doubt familiar with the mantra to blog (or create a website or business around) your passion. The problem is that the mantra assumes that (a) one has a passion or (b) one has a singular (or at least very limited number of) passion(s).

But, I am Aquarius [INLINE TAG: thus somewhat answering Nina's birthmonth tag and I hereby tag Joanne, Pete, Terence, Doug (who won't do it but I tag nonetheless), Chanya, Deborah, Sabrina, Rolando, JD, Phil, Robert and Bobby. /INLINE TAG] so I am interested in a variety of things. Thus, it makes it difficult for me to stick to anyone topic.

Oh sure, I’ll sit and think, well, I’m interested in this, but then a week or two later, something else has grabbed my attention.

Certainly, I have an interest in making some money at blogging and websites and so on, but that doesn’t appear to be panning out. So, perhaps it’s time to ditch the “expert” advice and just do my own thing.

So, I’m thinking different topics on different days. Instead of posting things as soon as I write them, or within a couple days thereof as I typically do even when using the timestamp feature, I can schedule them for the next category day. Thus, you’ll always see fresh content here. Every day. Even (hopefully) when life throws a curveball into the normally smooth operation of things, such as what happened in March.

And, since everything will be organized in categories, you can more easily ignore those topics (or days) that don’t interest you.

Sounds like a reasonable plan to me. That way, you won’t have half a dozen posts in 6 different categories appearing daily, so things should be a little easier to go through. Certainly easier than, for example, John Chow’s blog, where it can sometimes be quite a challenge to sift through the reviews and lunch pictures and so on to find a useful gem these days.

Plus, I need to get back to Lillie Ammann’s winning description of my blog: “dcrBlogs motivates readers to believe, act, and achieve by looking at life with wit, wisdom, and engaging creativity.”

My current thinking is:

_____ Sunday
Mundane Monday (see examples)
_____ Tuesday
Wordy Wednesday (fiction)
_____ Thursday
Foto Friday (or Photo Phriday) (photos)
_____ Saturday

I would like a guest post day for one of the blanks. Also, due to its popularity, a day with “Weird Stuff You Can Win on eBay” but not sure whether to have that a weekly feature or maybe something every two weeks or once a month. Also, a link sharing day, where I share interesting sites or articles I have come across.

Each day would have a single post for that day’s category, to be posted in the morning. If I have something else to write about that doesn’t fit into one of those seven categories, I would do it as an afternoon or evening post. As you know, I have a number of other categories, and I would just post to those as the topics come to me.

I don’t necessarily have to have an alliteration for each day, but I would prefer to do so, as it would help people remember what topic I will have for that day.

So, anyway, that’s what I’m thinking for what maybe we’ll call dcrBlogs 2.0, or maybe dcrBlogs 2008. Or maybe we don’t need no stinkin’ 2.0 or 2008 or whatever.

By the way, if you’re interested in how nurses in private practice kept records back in 1903, the relevant entry, “Keeping the Records,” was posted on Practical Points in Nursing earlier today.

Thanks for the tag! This looks like another fun one. I’ll get to it next week, prob’ly.

And…how about “Serious Saturday” and “Silly Sunday”? I like “Tech Tuesday.”

Maybe. As I think about it, I could just do free-for-all weekends or something. I’m not sure if many people actually read blogs on weekends, and putting anything heavy on a weekend would probably end up competing with Monday’s post. So, silly stuff could work on Sunday…

Ah, an Aquarian. That explains everything. I’m an Aries, so I refuse to conform to your posting schedule. But I’ll continue visiting anyway because I’m a stubborn fool. :D

I’m a big fan of the eBay posts. Tech Tuesday is a great suggestion and maybe a good place to post all of your 3D renderings and how you did them.

I’m Aquarius under the tropical zodiac, but Capricorn under the sidereal zodiac.

I guess Tech Tuesday is a popular idea. I could do the 3D renderings. Haven’t done one in a while.

I’ve been wondering what’s been going on with you lately. You’ve seemed so out of it that I figured you were once again trying to “find your feet”

DAN:

I also like the Tech Tuesday idea.

I like Silly Sunday too. You could write short posts about stupid things that people get caught doing. For example, the guy that was running from police and got caught impersonating a dead body in a funeral home.

Thanks for the tag DCR! I know exactly how John Chow got where he is, and could probably do the same thing; however, I just cannot bring myself to do it. I should say, I cannot lower my standards to earn money. He did anything and everything for links and traffic, using heartless, cutthroat tactics. His goal is to destroy his competition while elevating himself. He also shows what a greedy, money hoarding miser he is in everything he does. In business, nice guys finish last. Actually, nice guys are buried under the bottom of the rubble. That is how money is made, although it is a sad reality. That’s why I don’t worry about it. The advice of the “experts” is really meant to keep people down, not to teach them how to be successful. Once a blog is making big money, it can basically run on autopilot, much like Chow’s is now…that’s why I NEVER read it. I do however respect his killer instinct and the fact that he’s unafraid to use it.

I got it done Dan. In regards to the money making stuff, I don’t get involved at least not with my personal blogs. My truck forum doesn’t too bad with text links ads from http://www.textlinksads.com/

I won’t be quiting my day job soon, but I make more pocket money with less effort than the other money making programs out there.
