Monday Madness

No Mundane Monday post today (probably). I’m pretty tired out from working on my taxes this weekend, primarily Sunday. Just one bit left to finish. And, after that, I need to get things ready for a photo shoot for a client on Tuesday. I received a new piece of equipment on Saturday, so I need to set that up for Tuesday’s appointment.

As I mentioned yesterday, though, I did find the time to get the new blog setup. Mostly. Just need to finish fiddling with the stylesheet so the colors all match up! Here it is: Find the Best Credit Card dot Com. It’s a site I’ve had for a number of years, with the only content basically being what you see in “The Basics” message. I’ve never gotten anything out of it–even tried to sell it once, but no takers. So, we’ll see how it goes with a blog and some regular updates.

In setting it up, with WordPress 2.5, I’ve discovered that some plugins don’t seem to work with it. The two I noticed are Brian’s Threaded Comments and Popularity Contest, which is a bummer since I use both of those as my basic plugins on all my blogs. Anyone know of replacements for these two? Or, maybe I’ll hold out for upgrades before updating all my blogs to WordPress 2.5.

What are you going to use that credit card site for? Is it going to be a content based affiliate site? I was thinking about starting either a content based site or something of the sort with an old domain I have.

Yes, I do plan on using it as a content-based affiliate site. I’ve had it running for about three years as a one-page site with just the content that’s in “The Basics” post. I get a small amount of traffic with no promotion at all. I did use Google AdWords for it a year or so ago, but didn’t get much traffic out of that, probably because I didn’t bid high enough to get into a noticeable position.

I think WordPress is a pretty good option for utilizing under-used domain names. You can quickly get something set up that pings other sites when you post something new, that you can easily add to your social networking sites as another site you run, that easily allows people to participate, that makes linking back and so forth easier, that is ready for interaction with the various social networking sites and various marketing and promotional tools, that is quickly optimized for the search engines, that lets you get ads running relatively easily, and makes it easy to update, even remotely through eMail or a blog posting software utility.

So, if you have under-utilized domain names, setting up a simple site with WordPress is a good way to put them into use. Unless you have a product to sell, it’s probably a better option than a single page website. The downside, of course, is that, if you don’t update it in a while, it will be readily apparent. Unless you code it so the date doesn’t display, in which case it may look a little questionable, unless you radically modify the site so that it doesn’t look like a blog at all.
