Wordless Wednesday: The Boys of Summer

This is the 17-year variety. A fair number of them this year. Don’t remember seeing them at all in my backyard 17 years ago. I wonder if development over the past 17 years has pushed them more my way. Haven’t seen any of the annual variety yet this year.
Since we do have the annual cicadas around here, I’m used to their singing. But, these 17-year-olds are out in such numbers that their singing becomes something of a hum in surround sound. It sounds like something out of a science-fiction movie. Heck, maybe that’s where some of those scifi sounds are recorded from! I tried to get some audio recorded on my digital camera, but it didn’t turn out very well. I hope to try again with a microphone connected to either a video camera or directly to my computer.

The detail on this shot is amazing!!
Thanks!
I’m glad we don’t have those “boys” here. We have black flies and mosquitoes. The black flies bite and cause the blood to run down your face. Unfortunately, they keep me indoors until they start to die off.
You can keep your black flies and mosquitoes. I’ll take cicadas over them any day!
What a close up! I don’t know where your neck of the woods is, but you can have them! Please!!
They’re friendly though!
Once again you take Wordless Wednesday &
make it wordy!
Great picture- the vibrant colors make me want to squish him and eat him.
Some people do eat them.
Yeah, what’s with the words dude? Always the rebel.
I’ve found a lot of them in my yard as well. Not sure what makes them annual or otherwise, but I’m seeing more for some reason. Usually, I just hear them.
The annual one around here is green and black. I know there are different varieties; I think there’s a 13 year cicada too. But, I’m not familiar with all the different appearances. I’ve only seen the type pictured and the annual one I’ve described.
Words are a bonus. People come looking for the picture, then, WOW!, text too! Bonus!
Nice photo - tho I hate these things. I remember when they invaded in the 70s. I was afraid to go out of my house. No matter. They came down our freaking fireplace!
Just a fair amount of noise, but not really too bad. They’re not quite as noisy as the annual cicadas, though they are much more plentiful.
He’s actually kind of pretty in that shot. I can’t believe I’m calling a bug pretty, but I am.
The eyes mesmerize you into doing whatever he wants.
