Cleaning Out the Links amidst Other Things
Based on Michael Kwan’s recommendations in his review of my blog, I have been doing some housecleaning.
The first thing I did, which wasn’t Michael’s recommendation but something I’ve been meaning to get to for a long time, is to fix the sidebar so that it has a shaded background on more than just the main page.
Oops, before that I did fix the avatars in comments so that the text no longer runs into the images, which was one of Bobby’s pet peeves, and mine as well, but yesterday I finally sat down and figured out how to do it.
Next, I made the RSS Subscription buttons and text larger. I may do something more later to make them pop out a little more. One of Michael’s suggestions was to make it more prominent.
After that, I removed the Meta list from the sidebar, something I’ve also been intending to do for a long time. Michael didn’t mention it, but I think it’s one of those things that just screams “WordPress NEWBIE!” Since I’ve been using WordPress for nearly a year now, I don’t think I qualify any more as a newbie. So, removing the Meta list is a graduation of sorts.
Next, I changed the Top Commentators. Here were the previous ones, for the record:
Top Commentators (all-time, through July 9, 2008):
Pete (152)
Michelle Gartner (118)
Joanne (111)
Debo Hobo (69)
Rolando (53)
Thank you to all of my commentators. Henceforth, which is something I had planned to do in January (well, to at least refresh it anyway), the list will be updated weekly. So, you best comment frequently if you want to keep your name up there.
Blog Sparring
Many of you will, of course, remember Joanne, my blog sparring partner. I don’t remember the last score, but I now (again) have a higher Technorati rank than she does, even though mine’s been going down, down, down, and she hasn’t blogged in almost two months. So, I WIN! Of course, it is kind of an empty victory, as she isn’t around for me to really rub it in. I hope she is doing well, whatever she is doing, which is maybe still teaching yoga to bears, or something. No, that was supposed to be in the Fall, so who knows what she’s been up to…
Okay, next I changed the most Popular Posts in the sidebar to my most Notable Posts. Some of the Popular Posts were only made popular by spammers trying to comment on them all the time, so it’s difficult to tell what the truly popular posts are. So, I just picked some I wanted to highlight and swapped them out.
After that, I did some more link cleaning…
Formerly Hot Blogs
You know, if a blog hasn’t been updated in a while, I don’t think I can consider them “hot” anymore. So, here are a few of the casualties of a cold-spell of their own making.
A Blog That Lies - No new posts since last year. Alex was one of the first additions to my Hot Blogs list. And, he did my first “free” review (I won a contest).
ChrisBloczynski.com - Nothing for a couple months. I was the second place winner in his first contest.
NetBusinessJournal.com - No new posts since last year, and now it’s just an error message. Tom even knew Polish.
I wish all of them the best of luck in their current endeavors and if any or all of them return to blogging, I might re-add them to the list. I say “might” because who knows how heartless and cold and stingy I may become with my links after I’ve finished following through on some of Michael’s recommendations…
Oh, and I just added a “Subscribe by eMail…” option.

I am saddened that I can no longer sit back and swill MD 20/20 whilst enjoying my position at the top. Now I have to work for it. Bah.
Regarding avatars, where do your comments pull them in from? I’ve changed it everywhere I can think of and it’s still the old avatar. Hmm… Nice breakdown of blog updates, they should help a lot.
The avatars come from MyBlogLog.
And, I’m sure Michelle will make you work hard for that top spot. You’re only ahead of her by one comment.
And Deborah knocked you both down.
Since your in the mood to clean, feel free to drop by my home and do some cleaning. ;o)
Too far to drive. Sorry.
Hmm, I guess I need to make the same adjustment to my top commentator links as well. I’ve seen a few of my “top” commentators drop by but they don’t leave comments anymore. You are right! time to make them work for it again after all DeboHobo is a PR3.
Michael did a really good review on your blog. I think I need to make that investment as well as DeboHobo has reached its one year mark this month.
Whelp see you around the rat race
I’m a PR4. I guess I better start being stingy with outgoing links!
You know as far as cleaning it makes me really sad- that all your top commentators
except for me have some sort of link on your home page.
Be it hot blogs or photo blogs or whatever… I think you are freaked out by my genius.
You have a sidebar link on my other blog, which is actually better since it’s in the same niche!
Oh, and I knocked you out of the Top Commentators spot on another blog.
Oh Dan - all this shameless bragging about your PR 4
and I just overtook you in two days on Technorati.
All because I like to rub old lamps…
Yeah, you overtook me with that viral link list that went around. Boosts you in Technorati, but kills you in Google.
You know I really don’t worry about Google anymore…
They busted down one of my old blogs
Smart not Cheap PR 3 to 0 and I stopped writing on it anyway- because
I started to hate it and only used it to make $$$. Doing paid posts- which I hate to say I miss the $300 a month for a few hours of work of month. I mean I can pop a paid post in 10 minutes and make $15 - that’s hard to give up. When kids want movie money and I am blogging anyway…
Well- that sucker still brings in money. Today I made $1.50 in Adsense on it and it does nothing but sit. See that messes with my mind. It makes me want to go back to it and post- since it makes more money then my vintage blog.
I actually think the thrifty niche is hot right now because of this recession. I have to think about it. Can you smell the smoldering brain cells…. ;0)
I would stop the vintage thing before you get trapped- there is no money there, only spendings!!! I am only trying to warn you and you know I am right.
For a long time, two blogs that I haven’t updated in ages have been making more money than this one, which I update daily (on average).
I have a website that I haven’t updated in years that still brings in traffic.
As for the vintage thing, I won’t be spending any money that I wouldn’t already have spent. So, any money that comes in from it is a bonus.
Yeah, I probably should have done some sort of thrifty website, rather than investing in all the real estate domains I have…

By the way, thanks.
