What Adults Did for Fun Before the Internet

No doubt, this question has plagued people for decades. Well, maybe one decade. Anyway, what did adults do for fun way back when? Well, they played games that today would seem rather lame. Then again, that might explain why older generations were able to do math without calculators.

Here’s an example adult game from Games for All Occasions published in 1909:

BUZZ

This is a very old game, but is always a very great favorite. The more the players, the greater the fun. The way to play it is as follows. The players sit in a circle and begin to count in turn, but when the number 7 or any number in which the figure 7 or any multiple of 7 is reached, they say “Buzz,” instead of whatever the number may be. As, for instance, supposing the players have counted up to 12, the next player will say “13,” the next “Buzz,” because 14 is a multiple of 7 (twice 7)–the next player would then say “15,” the next “16,” and the next would of course say “Buzz” because the figure 7 occurs in the number 17. If one of the players forgets to say “Buzz” at the proper time, he is out. The game then starts over again with the remaining players, and so it continues until there is but one person remaining. If great care is taken the numbers can be counted up to 70, which, according to the rules before mentioned, would of course be called Buzz. The numbers would then be carried on as Buzz 1, Buzz 2, &c., up to 79, but it is very seldom that this stage is reached.

Wow! Nothing like coming home after a hard day’s work and settling in for a great game of Buzz, eh?

No doubt, at some point, and I’m thinking right after Prohibition ended (heck, this may have been the catalyst for ending Prohibition), this probably is what mutated into the drinking game “Bizz Buzz.” I’m thinking that a few rounds of “Buzz” would be sufficient to drive the most alcohol-abstinent of people to drink.

Wow - I had never heard of that game before. That is way too much math - I’d never last. LOL. I actually thought you were going to talk about the game where when two people say the same thing at the same time, one has to be the first to then yell “Buzz!” There are different variations, but when that happens, the other person can’t speak until their name is spoken out loud by another person or they have to buy a soda for the person who yelled “Buzz.” This was very different.

We had some, um, different games as kids too. Did you ever play Donkey Ears?

“Did you ever play Donkey Ears?”

I’ll bite- which jackass gets his ears pulled off?

No, think lamer.

One person is “it.” Everyone else takes turns asking that person a question. To every question, that person must answer “Donkey ears.” Whoever laughs first ends up being the next person to be “it.”

It’s strange the things we find amusing as kids.

What the ??? You almost got me to curse…

Who came up with that? That’s the dumbest game I have ever heard of- sounds like it was invented by pot heads…

Nope. No drugs or alcohol was involved. Maybe a sugar high, but that was probably about it.
