Back to Square One

Over the past 45 days or so, I’ve been working on a number of projects. I’ve put a good amount of time and money into them. I learned some things from the “big boys” and was putting those things to use. Finally, I thought I had the answers to making a good amount of money online. I was looking forward to both getting the checks, as well as sharing the details with you so you could do the same.

Then, I discovered this weekend that I can’t use any of it.

Oh, I could use it–there are plenty of others that do–but there are some pretty hefty risks involved too. You see, maybe 99% of the stuff could be used, but maybe 1% might not. (And, those figures are only estimates.) But, you don’t know if what you’re using is in that 99% or in that 1%.

So, I shut down 15 websites this weekend and had to toss an eBook I had about 25,000 words into.

Maybe I’ll do a post explaining all the details sometime, but it’s just too frustrating to get into right now. On top of that, I really could have used that time and money for other things, especially if I had known I was basically just flushing it all down the toilet.

So, back to square one. What a way to start the week.

Well, that really sucks. I’m truly sorry for all the effort and time you put into this. I do hope you’ll share more info with us so we may also learn from it. Again, that is really terrible and I’m sorry it happened to a such a nice guy.

Thanks. I’ll probably put together a post when I’m a little less frustrated and can think more clearly. Spent most of the day trying to figure out where to go now, so I didn’t get much of anything worthwhile done this weekend.

Dan:

That sounds very scary! Sounds like you have learned a huge lesson and I want to learn that from you.

I doubt that those unusable stuff are related the copyright or legal concerns. Are they? There is no fun to shot down 15 web sites and hard working hours. Is that because of the crowded niches or huge competition?

I have done the same thing in the past to shut down a web site that took me 6 months to develop. Now I realized that I have gave up too early. Someone tweak my idea and is now making about $9000 / month.

I don’t think you are back to square one. I think you are drawing a bigger picture that can lead you to better results.

Looking forward to hearing from your experience!

Crowded niches and huge competition isn’t a big deal; it just indicates there is money to be made in that niche.

With the work and money I spent over the last 45 days, I was figuring I could earn $1,000 to $3,000 in short order.

And, yes, it is related to copyright and legal concerns. It’s a situation where you think you’re doing everything right, and maybe 99% of the time you’re going to be right, but there’s a little trap of sorts and that 1% can turn around and bite you.

As I said, I thought I could make as much as $3,000 but I could lose $150,000 or more. Some people may be willing to take the risk, and probably more take that risk without even knowing it.

This was a preventative measure on my part. I learned of the risk over the weekend and decided that’s not a risk I want to take. What I did may very well have been in that 99%, and I might have been able to make $3,000 without worrying. But that small chance that they could have been in that 1% was just a risk I wasn’t willing to take. And that only covers the financial risks, and not the ethical ones which would also be involved.

Sorry to hear that, Dan. I know it must be frustrating.

But on a lighter note, teeni did say you’re a nice guy.

Thanks. Yeah, now I have 15 websites to rebuild. Someday. Maybe I’ll just sell the domain names. I don’t know yet.

But, did you see what Teeni did to me?

That’s always frustrating, Dan! But, at least you had the wisdom to recognize when it was time to call it quits. And the lessons learned through the experience will no doubt prove valuable to you in all your future endeavors.
