If I Had a Nickel…
If I had a nickel every time someone left a comment, I would have $218.85.
If I figure spam comments into that, I’d have another $1,340.20. And, for a nickel a comment, I might consider letting the spam comments stay instead of deleting them.
Then again, maybe a spam comment should be a quarter. That’s give me $6,701.00. I like that better.
Okay, a regular comment is a nickel and a spam comment is a quarter. Heck, regular comments can be left for free. I’ll just make the spammers pay.
It’s kind of like It’s a Wonderful Life. Every time 500 spammers leave a comment, a bill gets paid. Sounds like a plan.

If spammers had to pay you every time they did it, we’d be able to get rid of them once and for all.
If you start charging, then I’m not commenting anymore. I can’t afford you.
Spammers are usually backed by some form of a budget. Provided that the site actually provides a non-nofollow link, I think a quarter/link is a fair price to ask.
