So, Say I Have Something You Want

Never mind what it is. That’s not the point. The point is that you want to be a part of it. So, let’s just get that out of the way right now. I don’t want to hear that, oh, I don’t think I’d want to be a part of that. Okay? Bottom line: You want in. That’s the assumption we’ll start this question with.

One more time: You want in.

So, I have something you want. Now, what would you be willing to do to get it?

1) Register to be a part of it. Included in registration is being on my mailing list, where you’ll get messages from me in your eMail. So, basically, you have to sign up to get in on this something you want and you have to accept receiving eMails from me. (Not excessive, mind you. Probably once or twice a week and very probably not more than one per day. Because, you know, the odds of me writing two eMails a day is pretty slim. Heck, I can barely manage a halfway decent blog post most days.)

2) Pay an annual fee to be a part of it. Probably under $20.

3) There is no three. I thought there would be a three, but it turns out there isn’t one. Still thinking, and still not coming up with a three.

So, those are your options. Once again, this is something you want. So, which is it? And don’t say “3″ because three isn’t really an option.

Or, do you just do whatever it takes to get you what you want?

It really depends on how badly I want in. If you want me to pony up cash, it better be something I really want.

Everything that is “free” is subsidized somehow. So, if you are providing content to users, you have to be able to underwrite the costs associated with doing that. Charging a subscription fee is the most obvious option, of course. As an alternative, you could have ads that run in the subscriber area that could underwrite your costs (either space that is sold to third parties, affiliate ads, one time offers, etc.).

If you have content that users want, they’ll pay for it. But, in order to demonstrate that you can deliver the goods, you’ll either need some sort of “teaser” option that provides a sample of what they can expect, or offer some basic (but valuable) content for free that is outside the members’ area.

Hope that helps!
