I Designed More Logos

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

As I mentioned yesterday, I designed 48 logos, trying to develop one that I liked and met my criteria.

Well, as I also mentioned, I was going to design some more.

I don’t know how many more I did last night, but I am now up to 102 different logo possibilities.

Mind you, those are not 102 completely different logos. Many are slight variations of one another and others are simply changes in color. So, the actual number of distinct logos is far smaller than 102.

There is also a fair amount of mixing and matching. I am sticking with three basic colors that have been the company colors from the get-go. I did try some different colors, using a complementary palette, but that didn’t work out at all. Didn’t even save that monstrosity—it was that bad.

I could have kept trying different colors, but I want to stick to the ones I’ve already chosen, so that bad logo design just made it easier for me to stay away from changing colors.

If you’re interested in the colors, one of them is black. The other two can be seen in my Wordless Wednesday Whirly post.

Kind of retro…

I Designed 48 Logos Today

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Bummer that you can’t see any of them.

Actually, to be fair, many of them are variations on the same basic logo. Plus, I did some recycling from previous logo work I’ve done for the same company (which is one of mine).

I printed out 37 that I did before I came home from work, intending to review them and pick one out.

Instead, I came up with 11 more variations. And, the night is young, so there may be more later.

I am trying for a 1950s look with the logo. The basic logo type will be the same as I have used since day one, but it will be incorporated into a fuller design. My original logo for this company also had a triangle in it. I’ve used the triangle off and on as I’ve created new logos over time, but I’d like to find a way to work it into the design so that I still have a touch of my original logo, plus a retro look.

One of the ones I am liking at the moment has a fifties look and the triangle, but it looks a bit busy.

Oh, and I just came up with a couple more ideas… Off to go do those!

Dance Master Ron Never Rocked On

MP3 Player

Since I can’t put up any new images, here’s another flashback image for you.

It actually looks pretty cool. It’s an MP3 player I made myself. You probably don’t remember it from my “Rock On, Dance Master Ron” post from almost two years ago.

Well, Dance Master Ron never rocked on because I don’t think I ever did that animation I mentioned in the post. In fact, I don’t even remember what the animation was going to be. Maybe it’ll come back to me at some point.

And why was it filed under Science Fiction? Maybe that should be a clue, but it’s not helping.

The Hodgepodge Rodger Dodger Massage Lodge

Log Pile

Oops. It looks like the Hodgepodge Rodger Dodger Massage Lodge is still under construction. Those darn contractors never show up on time.

Anyway, in an effort to recycle and fight off the mythical “global warming”, but more because I still can’t upload pictures, I decided to check into the past April 17ths on this blog and see what could be done with those old posts by way of saying something new and relevant about the old photos.

But, neither of the past April 17ths’ blog posts had any pictures.

Last year, it was all about Oprah joining Twitter. It was shortly after that that Facebook seemed to gain a resurgence. Did Oprah hurt Twitter by making it seem less cool?

The year before that, April 17th fell on a Thursday, so I had some Heady Links for Thinking Thursday. And all those links still work! Usually, two years in, you’d have a few blogs drop off, but, in this case, all those bloggers stuck around.

As it was, Thinking Thursday was a short-lived theme, lasting only two posts, one of which was a teaser for a project that never came to fruition.

What? You want a cute photo? Well, how about this one of Little Too from April 11, 2008?

Silly Russian Bride Spammers Strike Again

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Silly spammers, I’m not that stupid.

You may remember my post on mail-order Russian bride spammers.

Well, I received another one.

It was addressed to one of my business addresses. So, even if I had dating profiles out online, I wouldn’t be using my business address for it. Strike 1, silly spammer.

Next, the sender’s name is, once again, a man’s name. And, it’s not ambiguous; it’s not one of those names that could go either way. It’s a man’s name. Strike 2, silly spammer.

Next, “she” claims she found my profile on some Chinese dating site. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be using a Chinese dating site, especially since I cannot currently read Chinese. Strike 3, silly spammer.

Again, the address I am supposed to respond to is different from the sender address. The sender address, by the way, is from an eMail address in Florida, not Russia. A school eMail address, no less. Strike 4, silly spammer.

Cleverly, her hand is cropped out of the photo that was attached to the eMail, so as to hide any rings. ;)

But, four strikes is more than enough to toss him/her/whatever. Actually, one would have been enough…

Silly spammers…

Apples and Asteroids

Can’t upload new photos, but I can recycle old ones. JD didn’t know what a Newton was, so here’s a picture.

Apple Newton MessagePad 100

That’s from my Apple Newton MessagePad 100 post from almost three years ago.

Moon

I see the moon, and the moon sees me. How is that for mediocrity?

By the way, Obama doesn’t want us to go to the moon. He wants us to go to an asteroid instead. Oh boy. Let’s find out what asteroid-walking will be like. Also, instead of fireworks on July, instead we’ll just bang pieces of flint together…

Wordless Wednesday?

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Today is Wordless Wednesday.

You know, the day where you post a picture instead of words.

Or maybe you just use fewer words than normal but still have words and a photo.

So, let’s see if WordPress will let me upload a photo today…

Nope.

Okay. See you tomorrow.

No More Photos

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Looks like maybe I won’t be able to post photos on this blog anymore.

For whatever reason, the upload feature in WordPress is not working. The Flash uploader does not work. The browser uploader does not work.

I tried replacing the Flash uploader with a new copy, but that didn’t make a difference.

The only way that I can get a picture up here is to FTP it to the site, but then I can’t put it in my media library, so there’s more manual work involved.

And, if I have to go through that amount of manual work to put up a blog post, why even use WordPress? Might as well do a straight HTML blog.

Maybe this is another bad sign. As I previously mentioned, I’ve been trying to reach 1000 days of consecutive daily blogging. I hit 500 last year. I don’t hit 1000 until December 27th of this year.

If I can’t have pictures, you may have to deal with boring, pictureless blog posts for the rest of the year. And, if uploading pictures isn’t back to working by then, it’ll probably be sionara to WordPress, because I’m not going to continue to fight the blasted thing.

How Does Your Dog Measure Up?

Little Too 0385

Stupid WordPress. Won’t let me upload a photo. Had to do it manually instead. If this keeps up, WordPress may get the ol’ heave-ho…

Anyway, so a couple months back, I mentioned I ought to put a ruler in with my camera so that I could put it in photos to show sizes.

Well, clearly it wouldn’t be a good idea to put a wooden ruler in snow. Not unprotected anyway.

So, I took a wooden ruler and sprayed a protective clearcoat on it. Made it pretty thick too. So, it should be well protected. Haven’t had any snow to try it in though.

But, the back side of the ruler was blank. I couldn’t let that go to waste. So, I have a ruler that can be used to measure things on the front while the back glows in the dark. Yeah, fun stuff.

Anyway, so I use it in other pictures too. Like this picture of Little Too trying to sleep. I figured I’d get a photo, but then the ruler was right there in the camera case, so why not sneak that into the shot so future generations will have some inkling of size.

Perfect? Maybe not. But, future generations will have sophisticated computers that can extrapolate and this ruler will help them a lot. Maybe future generations will thank me for my lame pictures someday.

Because I’ve taken lots of lame photos of everyday things other people just toss. But, I am preserving a visual record for posterity.

Anyway, sometimes the clear coating on the ruler doesn’t work out so well. It is also a high gloss finish, so sometimes it is a bit too reflective…

Homegrown Blueberries

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

Homegrown blueberries must be a hot niche this season.

I keep getting spam messages about homegrown blueberries.

Maybe Viagra isn’t selling so well these days so the spammers are switching to fruits.

Anyway, I tried growing blueberries years ago. I think. I know I tried raspberries and I thought I had purchased a raspberry bush and a blueberry bush. But, now that I think about it, maybe it was just raspberries.

Or maybe I did get both. I really don’t remember. I do know that I didn’t get any blueberries or raspberries that year. Had I had one or the other, I would have been more likely to remember it. Such as it is, all I was left with at the end of the season was two bare stumps.

I may not have planted them soon enough after getting them in the mail. And, I think it was a hot summer and I probably didn’t water them. You know, I did better with plants before I had a job. In my school years, during the summers, I would have tons of plants. I could check them every day and still go out and play and all the other things you do as a kid. Then, come winter, I’d move them inside.

But, since starting work years ago, that doesn’t happen. I don’t check them every day. I don’t always get home before dark, so sometimes it’s too late to water them and other times, by the time you’ve eaten dinner, well, it’s too late to water them.

Combine that with some really dry summers we’ve had, and that just about spells disaster for many plants.

Well, at least the strong survive. The tiger lilies are back, for example. And, I’m feeling optimistic about a tomato plant I have. I successfully overwintered it, so it’s got a head start on the season.
