Success September: Don’t Be Distracted by Shiny Things

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Some people get distracted by bright and shiny things.

Not always directly.

Sometimes, people chase after the bright and shiny things.

Getting them is their goal.

In doing so, they overlook the ugly rocks along the way.

The thing is that many gemstones start out hidden in ugly rocks.

They must be carefully excised from the ugly shell.

Then they are polished and cut.

And then they are bright and shiny.

Which is what people are after.

But people get so absorbed with pursuing the finished product that they don’t see all the hidden gems they’ve passed along the way.

Success September: Sunday Cleaning

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

It’s okay to clean on Sunday too.

Assuming you have no religious convictions against doing so, of course.

Even if it means not working on your goal.

But cleanliness is next to godliness, and if you are closer to godliness, maybe you are closer to your goal.

But, then again, I don’t know what I’m saying anymore.

And you may not either.

So, then we have symmetry.

Anyway, stay clean, my friends.

Success September: Nothing on a Saturday

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

Instead of working through the weekend, it’s okay to get stuff done around the house.

Like clean.

Or clean.

Or clean.

Yeah. Sometimes you need to clean stuff.

It’s okay. You don’t have to work all the time.

You’re not a machine.

Well, I guess cleaning is work. It’s just work you don’t get paid for, unless you run a cleaning business (which you can learn about at Office Cleaning Income dot Com).

In which case it’s practice.

Either way, it’s okay.

Success September: Friday Quitting Edition

Friday, September 17th, 2010

It’s Friday.

Again.

Day’s over.

Don’t need to keep working.

It’s okay to play a game in the evening.

Really.

It’s okay.

Just so long as you did actual work during the day.

Otherwise, get yourself back to work!

Success September: When Storms are Brewin’

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

If you’re like me, you don’t want to have your computer connected to anything while there’s a storm outside, especially if there is a lot of lightning. You just don’t want to take the risk of something happening.

And, it’s okay to be off the computer for a couple hours.

But, how do you get work done when Mother Nature seems to be against you?

If you have a laptop, you can always run off the battery until the storm is over. If your Internet connection is wired and not wireless, I would unplug from the network. Electricity from lightning wouldn’t just travel through power lines! You never know if your network cabling could be a conduit.

So, I’d stay disconnected unless you have a wireless connection.

If you don’t have a laptop or when the battery runs out, you can resort to more retro means. Grab a pad and pen and write your material, so that you can type it in later. Or, you could research using that old-fashioned memory storage system: books.

Then again, if the storm doesn’t last too long, you could take advantage of a short break from both technology and your work. Just so long as it is not another in a line of excuses to avoid work!

Success September: There is No Internet ATM

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

A lot of people seem to want some sort of Internet ATM.

Likely because there are several ads that you’ll come across that mention such a thing, that you can make money while you sleep and basically have your own Internet ATM.

But, there isn’t one.

Success, whether online or in the real world, takes time or money. The more you have of one, the less you may need of the other. But, for optimal results, maximizing both will be useful.

But, you’ll see people that are reluctant to spend time or money. They just want the money to magically appear in their bank account with no effort on their part.

But, you need to do one or the other. Or, as I said, both.

If you have no money, you’ll need to invest time.

If you have no time, you’ll have to invest money.

If you have neither time nor money, you’ll need to find some of one or the other.

There is no Internet ATM. So, roll up your sleeves and do some work, or pay someone else to do the work for you.

Don’t just daydream about your success and expect the money to magically appear.

Success September: Keep At It

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

So, no one thinks you can meet your goals?

Well, you can either give in to their opinions, or you can press ahead.

If you are confident in your plan, keep at it.

Don’t let the naysayers beat you down, especially if they’ve never accomplished what you’re setting out to do.

Now, if some self-made millionaire tells you that you’re on the wrong track, it may be worth your while to pay attention. After all, they’ve done it so they perhaps have more insight than your buddies who scrounge through the couch cushions for bus fare to the local pub.

Don’t let negativity keep you down. Listen to constructive criticism, but don’t give into general negativity.

Keep at it!

Success September: Stick with Your Plan or Not

Monday, September 13th, 2010

Once you have a plan, you should stick with it.

You should, naturally, give the plan a chance to work and avoid jumping from plan to plan without giving any of them enough time or effort for them to actually bear fruit.

On the flip side, you should not be so inflexible as to avoid abandoning a plan that is clearly not going to be fruitful. Don’t stick with a bad plan for the sake of being stubborn.

Finding the right balance between steadfastly following a plan and being flexible enough to change a plan is what needs to be done.

Of course, if all else fails, you can have a back up plan of buying a bunch of lottery tickets.

Only kidding on that last point.

Success September: Why Google Sucks and What It Means for You

Sunday, September 12th, 2010

So, here’s the thing…

Some time ago, I looked for a recipe online. I found one and everybody liked it. Decided to make the dish again this weekend, but the recipe has apparently been misplaced.

Tried looking for a copy on my computer, including an older computer, but could not find it. I likely didn’t save it because, at the time I printed it out, I didn’t know if it would turn out okay or not.

I tried in vain to find it on Google again. I entered what I thought I was likely to have entered when I first went looking for the recipe. I used words I remembered being in the recipe. Nothing. Couldn’t find it at all.

I ended up trying to look for another recipe, but that was largely fruitless as a lot of the sites that came up were garbage sites.

But, I digress…

The point is that you will be hard-pressed to find the same webpage again when you search Google again weeks or months later. If you didn’t save it the first time, you’re probably going to be out of luck.

And that’s why it’s important that you grab the reader’s attention when someone finds your site. You don’t necessarily have to have a mailing list and try to get them to join that (though that is something many marketers will recommend), but you have to have something compelling enough that they will bookmark your site or write down the URL or make note of it in someway so that, when they do decide to visit your site again, they’ll be able to find you.

Success September: Saturday Edition

Saturday, September 11th, 2010

Like yesterday, this one is going to be sparse.

Sometimes, there is much going on.

During those times, you may not be able to do everything to their fullest extent.

It’s okay.

Just concentrate on what is most important.

You’ll do fine that way.

No worries.

Got it?

Good.
